As noted in the SmartFlex Rewards Program's eligibility criteria, a heat pump and/or central air conditioning is required to participate in the SmartFlex Rewards Program.
When you apply for the SmartFlex Rewards Program (or install a thermostat that is pre-enrolled in the program), your thermostat will check that it is connected to eligible equipment. If your equipment is ineligible, you will receive an email informing you that your application cannot be approved.

What is central air conditioning?
Central air conditioning is a system that cools your home using a central unit that blows cold air from vents and ducts. Central air conditioning does not include an air conditioning unit that sits in your window, or a unit that is mounted on your wall or floor.

What is a heat pump?
A heat pump is a device that can be used to both heat and cool spaces, and is highly energy efficient. It works by transferring heat from one space to another rather than generating its own heat. Heat pumps can resemble central AC units. If you are unsure if your device is a heat pump, check your manufacturer's label/manual.

Creating a schedule
Creating a schedule
Programming your smart thermostat means creating a schedule that automatically heats or cools your home when you need it to. This not only saves time, but also can save you money on your energy bills.
During SmartFlex Events, the program’s adjustments keep you within three or four degrees of your programmed temperatures — so having a schedule that reflects your comfort needs ensures your temperatures don't drift too far from your ideal temperatures during events.
If you are on a Time of Use rate, setting a schedule will help you optimize your heating and cooling against the peak periods of your rate.
